Taking place in Singapore on 2 July 2013, the Waste Management Symposium is jointly organised by Waste Management and Recycling Association of Singapore (WMRAS), National Environment Agency (NEA) and International Solid Waste Association (ISWA) and supported by Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA).

NEA is providing data sets that have never been released publicly before and are not available on any public forum. The following data sets will be released exclusively for the hackathon weekend -

• Energy consumption for buildings registered under the Energy Smart Building Labelling Scheme

• Detailed household energy consumption figures from a national study

• Crowd-sourced littering, public cleanliness and food hygiene reports

• and more

They are also featuring data sets from CleanLah and X-Dengue, two applications already making great use of government data and are widely used by the public in Singapore.

SAP Workshop

Interested in how you can make sense of the new datasets available for the Clean & Green Hackathon? SAP is running a HANA One and Visual Intelligence workshop from 6:00pm to 7:00pm on 26th April 2013. (Free dinner provided)

Speakers from SAP will demonstrate how their database and analytics solution can analyse the data available in NEA’s data sandbox. Using your own Windows, Linux, or Mac computers, get started with HANA One or Visual Intelligence in under 30 minutes.

In support of the Youth for the Environment Day in April, National Geographic Channel (NGC) has partnered the National Environment Agency (NEA) to launch their first ever NGC-NEA Eco-Run to promote recycling efforts and awareness of environmental sustainability through youths. The run will take place on 20^th April 2013 at the Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park.

The inaugural NGC-NEA Eco-Run is non-competitive. Youths aged 13 to 25 can opt to run either 2.5km or 5km for the environment. To promote recycling efforts, participants can enlist support from family and friends to pledge the collection of recyclable items online. Awards will be given out to individuals and schools for the most recyclables and pledges collected. The event is also open to the public who can visit various activity booths at the Eco-Carnival and enjoy performances by the winners of the Eco Music Challenge.

Green Drinks Singapore

Founded in November 2007, Green Drinks Singapore is a non-profit environmental group that connects the community, businesses, activists, media, academia and government, for knowledge sharing and collaboration opportunities. We do this by organising informal talks every last Thursday of the month to allow opportunities for information sharing and networking, over drinks! Once in a while, we hold discussions, documentary screenings and workshops to further engage the public and participants, and we recently started our first campaign - SaferSkin, a campaign for safer skincare and cosmetics.

Singapore is one of more than 590 cities with a Green Drinks presence.  Started in 1989 in London, the Green Drinks movement is a self-organising network that is meant to be simple and unstructured. The global site can be found at www.greendrinks.org.

Addressing the population and resources constraints, Green Drinks March presents a talk you don’t want to miss. This month, we aim to bring together people who believes that through earnest planning, design ingenuity and innovation, we could achieve a sustainable environment for growth and progress especially in Singapore. We are very honoured to have speakers:

Allen Folks AICP, ASLA, Vice President Design + Planning, AECOM Singapore

One of the most prominent figure in urban planning and landscape architecture, Mr. Folks’s talk will focus on the role of urban designers in planning for sustainable cities. Through case studies both within Singapore and abroad, he will share his insights on sustainable planning and planning with resource constraints to meet future challenges.

Terence Ho, 5th Year Architecture Student, NUS

Mr. Ho is a pursuing his Masters in Architecture specializing in design technology and sustainability. He is also the current team lead of TeamNUS. TeamNUS collaborates with architects, builders and engineers to  design, build and operate a solar-powered houses. Mr. Ho’s other works include research on Energy Retrofit and studies on natural ventilation in high density buildings. He has also been the host for the NUS City Exhibition held at the URA  at which the TeamNUS model was featured.
